Cheque books and credit cards have gone along with caving gear. They suggest the totally impractical solution of leaving someone to ‘mind’ the vehicle! Friends in the EPC (who were responsible for installing the new rope) told me that they had decided to test the safety of the old chain following a rescue callout to a youth who had fallen down the fourth pitch. To their amusement/horror the chain pulled completely out of its bellay with very little effort.
